Chapter Three
Official decrees — sealed with lead, written in Latin, binding on all Christendom. These documents established the Vatican's legal claim over every soul, every acre of land, and every sovereign power on Earth.

The primary documents
Declared it "absolutely necessary for salvation" that every human creature be subject to the Roman Pontiff. Claimed the Pope holds supreme authority over all temporal (earthly) rulers. All kings and governments derive their authority from Rome.
Granted King Alfonso V of Portugal the right to "invade, conquer, and enslave Saracens, pagans and any other unbelievers." Established the Doctrine of Discovery — all lands not held by Christians could be claimed by whichever Christian nation first "discovered" them.
Ratified the Treaty of Alcáçovas, formally dividing the world between Portugal and Spain — with the Pope acting as arbiter. Demonstrated the Vatican's claimed authority to allocate the entire surface of the Earth to Christian kingdoms.
Divided the "New World" between Spain and Portugal along a meridian line. Granted Spain exclusive rights to the Americas and all their peoples. Instructed that indigenous peoples be "reduced to the Catholic faith." Used to justify the conquest of the Americas.
Declared that indigenous peoples of the Americas were rational beings with souls, capable of receiving the Christian faith — and therefore could NOT be enslaved. A partial reversal. But critically, it confirmed the framework: the Vatican decides who has a soul, and what rights flow from that determination.
The common thread
Across six centuries, every papal bull rests on a single foundational claim: that the Bishop of Rome is the vicar of Christ on Earth — and therefore holds authority over all creation. All creation includes all souls. All souls include yours.
Bonacci's contribution was showing how this theological claim was translated into functioning legal architecture — through maritime law, birth registration, and the corporate fiction of the modern nation-state. The theology didn't disappear. It was encoded into law, and law into administrative procedure, and procedure into the form you fill out at the hospital when a child is born.
